Sonia Brar named Innovator of the Year by Women in Communications and Technology

Women in Communications and Technology (WCT) honoured Sonia Brar, Vice President, IT – Bell Media & BCE Corporate Systems, as Innovator of the Year for 2020.

Sonia has been recognized for her innovative approach in leading large-scale digital transformation projects at Bell. She has also worked throughout her career to support and help develop women’s careers in an often male-dominated field.

Sonia earned a degree in psychology prior to completing an MBA in eCommerce. She then joined Bell where she has held progressively senior positions over the last 20 years, leading major systems implementations for consumer, small and medium businesses, call centre operations and media broadcast management.

One of Sonia’s most significant accomplishments came in 2017 when she led a major multi-year project, IFRS, in partnership with Accenture Canada to meet globally mandated requirements for recognizing and reporting revenue.

As an executive sponsor of the Women at Bell employee resource group, Sonia has engaged key leaders to discuss pivotal topics to support the development, advancement and visibility of women as leaders within Bell. She is also heavily involved in Bell’s IT grad program, helping to recruit and retain female team members, in addition to mentoring leaders.

Sonia serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors of Women in Film and Television-Toronto (WIFT-T). With her unique background and IT mindset, she has supported WIFT-T to develop impactful courses and programs for its members. She also plays an active role at networking and mentoring sessions, speaking to students about the rapidly changing IT and telecommunications industries.

Sonia is a member of the CIO Strategy Council, which recommends standards for a range of Canadian industry themes including data privacy. Sonia is also a member of the Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC), which champions the development of a robust and sustainable digital economy in Canada.

In her current role, Sonia is leading the delivery of strategic IT and technology programs for Bell Media, as well as BCE’s core finance, supply chain, fraud management, and HR and employee experience systems.
